Vet Nurses - real life superheroes!

What we do, don’t do and can do!

As we celebrate Vet Nurse Awareness Month I feel it is only right that I pay homage to my fellow colleagues and give you a little insight into what it is like to be a Veterinary Nurse and why we are so flaming awesome!

Registered Vet Nurses undergo around 3 years of theoretical and practical training to qualify. Many work as care assistants in practice for some time, prior to starting their training. Whilst human nurses tend to specialise or work in a specific area, many Vet Nurses in general practice have multiple roles. We are…

⭐️ Anaesthetists

⭐️ Theatre nurses

⭐️ Consultants

⭐️ Phlebotomists (blood taking)

⭐️ Lab Technicians

⭐️ Radiographers/Imagers

⭐️ Ward Nurses

⭐️ Triage Nurses

⭐️ Emergency & Critical Care Nurses

⭐️ Paediatric Nurses

⭐️ Geriatric Nurses

⭐️ End of life carers

⭐️ Expert animal handlers (and very brave at times)

⭐️ Stock control managers

⭐️ Receptionist and administrative assistants

⭐️ Dispensary nurses

⭐️ Cleaners

We don’t…

❌ Diagnose or make decisions on treatment

❌ Cuddle pets all day (you wouldn’t believe how many people think this).

❌ Earn a fortune (another myth of the profession), in fact up until recently many qualified Nurses earned close to minimum wage.

Not all Vet Nurses work in practice. We can…

👩🏻‍⚕️ Specialise in a certain area such as surgical nursing , anaesthesia and behaviour

👩‍🏫 Teach

💊Work in the pharmaceutical industry

💷 Work in the insurance industry

👩‍💼 Work in practice management

💼 Create our own businesses providing services such as dog walking, pet sitting, training and more!

My journey has involved working in practice for 14 years, which I loved, but I am now channelling my passion for canine behaviour into working towards becoming a Clinical Animal Behaviourist, and I am hoping to achieve this in 2024! 🤞

I know first hand how stressful, relentless, thankless and emotionally draining Vet Nursing can be but it is also so rewarding, every single shift is different and we are always learning something new. So lets hear it for all the amazing Vet Nurses out there who are working their asses off purely because they care about your pets.
