Top 5 tips for…successful training

  1. Short & sweet - a few minutes here and there throughout the day is much more achievable and works better than trying to fit a 30 minute block into your day. Think about working on skills whilst the kettle is boiling or during the advert break of your favourite show. Training really doesn't need to be time consuming.

  2. Fun & friendly - a dog that enjoys training will engage with you and be eager to work with you. Keep your tone light, smile (seriously they pick up on this) and throw in some tricks along with the serious stuff. If you turn all stern and serious during training then how is your dog going feel about it?

  3. Keep it simple - cues should be short, one word where possible and don't let them get lost in a sentence. "Wait" is much clearer than "ok, come over here, good girl, can you wait?" Many dogs are very visual so hand signals along with a verbal cue can work well to start with.

  4. Make it easy for them - when learning new skills we need to reward everytime with food, praise or play and teach them in a quiet and familiar environment. If we want our dogs to be able to settle calmly in a busy cafe, they have to be able to settle calmly at home first and build up to busier and more challenging environments.

  5. End on a high - finish every session on a positive. If your dogs is struggling with a skill, ask them to do something really simple that they are good at, reward and take a break. Play is also a fantastic way to end a training session and actually helps to cement what they have learned.
